teletext

teletext
Teletext is a system of carrying data, graphic and textual information on top of the normal television broadcast signal. With an appropriately equipped television set in 40 percent of households in Britain (in 1992), many viewers are able to access this service. The IBA licensed Oracle in 1973, and the BBC started its service, Ceefax, in 1974. Both provide a mix of news, sports information, recipes, weather reports, travel information and so forth, laid out in indexed pages. Though the information provided is limited and one-way, compared to the more interactive telecommunication’s equivalent Prestel, it is free at the point of use and is constantly updated. Teletext is also the means by which broadcasters provide their captioning of programmes for the deaf.
